Distinguished and Famous people from Eden Valley
🌾 Joseph Gilbert
Joseph Gilbert arrived in South Australia in 1839 and developed Pewsey Vale near Eden Valley as a pastoral and agricultural property. His interests included livestock breeding and viticulture, with vines planted in 1847. The estate became part of the early wine history of the surrounding hills, alongside a much broader farming enterprise. Family records preserved by the State Library document several generations connected with the property. Gilbert’s contribution belongs specifically to Pewsey Vale, linking the Eden Valley district with an early experiment in combining pastoralism and winemaking.
